Goodbye (SEO) Columbus

Monday, February 7th, 2011

Most search marketers are aware of the awesome power of social media as a check upon predatory behavior (for any and all stupid acts tend to be presented to the entire community for comment / censure/ ridicule).  However, there are a few members of the community that are too thick-headed to realize that community wrath can become a very personal problem if they act inappropriately.

One of my social media friends is Mike Halvorsen, who does search engine optimization in Columbus Ohio.  He has earned a top Google ranking for the search terms a very relevant generic search phrase for his professional services.

“You’ve got nothing to hear
I’ve got nothing to say…” The Who

Folks who have hung out with me for any period of time know that I’m not the most verbal person around. I’m quite comfortable with saying very little in a group setting and when I do speak, I’m very succinct as if I were being charged for each word used. It’s not that I’m against conversation…I’m just wired to listen much more than talk. And, while I’m totally comfortable working a networking event and chatting with total strangers, doing so tires me out just as much (if not more so) than the most vigorous workout that I might ever do at the gym.

“I have no pride
I have no shame
You gotta make it rain
Make it rain!”…Tom Waits

I run a bunch of side gigs for folks in various aspects of Internet Marketing. I also was a former web developer who, at a time, had the best website key features for e-commerce to sell. One of the people I was working with was late in paying me, and when I made that fact known to them, I was told it would be soon taken care of. Sure enough, an envelope was passed to me by that person. It felt pretty thick, so I was thinking that perhaps they included some paperwork with the payment. Imagine my surprise when I opened it to see it full of mostly small bills (unbundled 20’s…and it was only about half of what I was owed).

Scenes From A Marriage

When I read books on my own time, I don’t read anything about Internet Marketing…I try to get as far the f*** away from that subject matter as possible.  Yet no matter where my eye and mind ventures, I end up making important connections to my daily livelihood.

Five Easy SEO Pieces

Friday, July 2nd, 2010

I’m not sure why I thought the following anecdote but since it percolated in my head, I thought I’d share it with you.

During college, a bunch of friends and I went to see the masterful Jack Nicholson film “Five Easy Pieces” that was screening on campus. We were all film buffs and reasonably intellectual, so as we watched the film, we analyzed the incredible work of art that we were witnessing. One of the obvious questions not apparently answered by the film was how it got its title.
